What's so Great about the Subaru Outback?

One look at the uniquely shaped Subaru Outback, and it's clear to even the SUV novice that there's something special about this vehicle. It's a crossover wagon of sorts, with an elongated body, low roof height, and plenty of off-road capability. This is the ideal vehicle for the family that like a bit of adventure with their road trips. It's also a practical daily driver, thanks to competitive fuel efficiency and a carlike ride quality (meaning this is a really comfortable crossover).

Here are a few talking points about the Outback's superior design:

The Outback is Off-Road-Friendly

In the cookie-cutter crossover world of merely sporty looking vehicles, the genuinely capable Outback truly stands out in the crowd. This vehicle is off-road-ready right out of the gate with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, hill-descent control, a hill holder feature, and Subaru X Mode traction control.

With the winter weather and varied terrain in the Rutland, Middlebury, Bennington and Manchester, VT area, as well as in Glens Falls NY and Lebanon, NH, the Outback offers driving confidence year-round. Its 8.7 inches of ground clearance goes unrivaled even by traditional SUVs, and it makes for easy off-road travel. An available 3.6-liter horizontally opposed (or "boxer") six-cylinder is worth 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque, and it gives the Outback the spirited performance it needs to excel here in Vermont.

An Ideal Family Vehicle

Simply put, the Outback feels like a beefed-up sedan, which means it delivers a comfortable and refined ride. Its smooth and potent performance makes for enjoyable road trips, errand runs, and everything in between. A maximum cargo space of 73.3 cubic feet goes unrivaled by its compact crossover competitors as well. Its boxy shape, roof rails with integrated cross bars, and a low roof height make for easy loading.

Creature comforts come standard as well, and they include a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone app integration and Bluetooth connectivity. Family vehicles should also prioritize safety as well as tech-savviness, and the Outback delivers on both counts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awards the Outback with top safety pick designations every year since 2010. The Outback earns top marks both for its crashworthiness and collision mitigation technologies.

The available Subaru EyeSight® suite of safety systems now includes reverse automatic braking and auto high beams, both of which are hard to come by in this segment and at this price point.

Trim Levels Available

  • 2.5i. The Outback lineup start off on the right foot with a standard 6.2-inch touchscreen, SUBARU STARLINKН infotainment, a rearview camera, and roof rails. All 2.5i models come powered by a 2.5-liter boxer 4cyl worth 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque.
